Evaluation of Thriller Opening
EVALUATION
In what ways does your media product use, develops or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?
A Thriller Film is a genre that revolves
around anticipation and suspense. The aim for Thrillers is to keep the audience
alert and on the edge of their seats. The protagonist in these films is set
against a problem – an escape, a mission, or a mystery. No matter what
sub-genre a Thriller film falls into, it will emphasise the danger that the
protagonist faces. The tension with the main problem is built on throughout the
film and leads to a highly stressful climax.
Sub-genre Thrillers
Action
Thriller
An Action Thriller uses physical action
to create suspense within the film. Like a traditional Action film, this
sub-genre will often have continuous motion and action including physical
stunts, chases, fights, battles, and races. Often, these scenes will contribute
to the overall sense of danger that the protagonist is facing.
Examples: Die Hard, Kill Bill Vol. 1, The Bourne Identity.
Crime Thriller
Crime Thriller film is a sub-genre that
incorporates the suspenseful aspects of a thriller with a crime film plot. This
sub-genre's plot usually centres on a serial killer, murderer, robbery, or
manhunt. As opposed to traditional crime films, the storyline focuses both
around the criminal and the protagonist. Crime Thrillers use both action and
psychological aspects to build tension and suspense.
Examples: The Usual Suspects, The Fugitive, Jagged Edge.
Film-Noir
Film Noir is not simply a sub-genre,
but rather a term for a distinct, stylistic type of crime-drama or thriller
that was popular throughout the 1940s and 1950s. Film-Noir is characterised by
a black-and-white style with stark lighting effects. The main character is
usually a cynical hero. Film-Noir relies on a narrative voice and various
flashbacks to explain the intricate plot.
Examples: Sunset Boulevard, The Maltese Falcon, Sweet Smell of Success.
Psychological
Thriller
In addition to the traits of a regular
Thriller, a Psychological Thriller incorporates elements of drama and mystery
film. The suspense in this sub-genre comes from the mind, rather than from a
physical threat. The protagonists in Psychological Thrillers must rely on their
mental resources to solve the situation. Because of their nature, many
Psychological Thrillers cross over into the Horror genre.
Examples: Memento, Rear Window, Taxi Driver.
Science
Fiction Thriller
Science Fiction Thriller incorporates
hypothetical, science-based themes into the plot of the film. Traditionally, a
Science Fiction film will incorporate heroes, villains, unexplored locations,
fantastical quests, and advanced technology. These elements can be used in a
Science Fiction Thriller to create anticipation and suspense. Often, this
sub-genre will explore the “future-gone-bad” theme, including plots that
revolve around alien invasions, dystopian scenarios, and super-diseases.
Examples: Aliens, Inception, District 9.
Religious
Thriller
Religious Thriller film incorporates
religious themes, including religious questions, ceremonies, and objects.
Though some films can revolve around a specific church, many Religious
Thrillers include supernatural experiences not pertaining to a certain
religion. Exorcisms, demon possession, and church cover-ups are typical themes
of Religious Thrillers.
Examples: The Devil’s Advocate, The Ninth Gate, The Da Vinci Code.
When creating our Thriller
opening we decided to make ours a Psychological Thriller. We did this by making
our characters within the opening to have no physical strength to overcome
their brutish enemy. I feel that the audience’s expectation for this type of
genre is to include:
The primary elements of the thriller genre:
- The leading character faces
death, either their own or somebody Else's.
- The main storyline for the
main characters is either a quest or a character that cannot be put down.
- The main plot line focuses on
a mystery that must be solved.
- The film's narrative
construction is dominated by the main actor’s point of view.
- All action and characters
must be credibly realistic/natural in their representation on screen.
- Either by accident or their
own curiousness, characters are dragged into a dangerous conflict or
situation that they are not prepared to resolve.
Characters
include
-criminals,
-stalkers,
-assassins,
-innocent victims (often on the run),
-menaced women,
-characters with deep dark pasts,
-psychotic individuals,
-serial killers,
-sociopaths,
-agents,
-terrorists,
- police officers ,
-private eyes,
-people involved in twisted relationships,
-world-weary men and women,
- psycho
-fiends

The main elements that we included within our thriller were Reality
and Mind. Within our thriller opening we decided to keep the identity of the
killer/villain a secret as we wanted to keep the theme of mystery. The main
challenge when creating this thriller was the sense of mind. We wanted to develop
the idea of showing who, what and why this killer was committing this sort of
crime. As a group we felt that this would be a challenge, and for the audience
members watching our thriller opening. We tried to include as many shots as we
could involve the killer to show his/hers point of view on the current
situation. Another element that we wanted to include within our thriller opening
is Identity. We wanted to create a sense of confusion and mystery for the
audience with regarding the stalkers identity. As the face of the stalker is
never shown this could make the audience members ask if whether the stalker is
either a male or a female.
In this slide it is showing
what we would be basing our thriller opening on. From looking at this we wanted
to base our opening on something which was based in the woods or somewhere with
an eerie and mysterious atmosphere.
In this slide it is explaining
what props and what location we were wanting to be filming our thriller opening
in. We were also discussing what props we were hopefully going to use.
Thriller conventions
Mise-en-Sceneghting is usually used during the mysterious and sinister
scenes, emphasising the suspense and tension. As well as creating an unsettling
atmosphere.
Is a French term meaning ‘what is put
into a scene or frame’ and what is seen. Moreover it can also be defined as the
arrangement of scenery and properties to represent the place where a film is
enacted. The elements of Mise en scene are signifies of what the genre would
be and as an audience what we would expect to see in that genre.
1) Lighting and colour - With the use of lighting the audience can assume on the genre by the way the lighting is displayed. In my own thriller, i used different levels of low key lighting as it creates a mysterious or suspense like atmosphere. Romantic comedies tend to use high key lighting to produce the romantic atmosphere of love. Colour is also a key convention for mise en scene as we associate emotions and thoughts with different colours, red can be associated with love, rage and blood. I can apply this to thriller conventions and use dark greys, black and red. Symbolising blood and death.

We used this particular effect when the
audience first see the girls with smudged makeup and a ghostly face.
This screen grab from our thriller opening is showing one of the main scenes of when the two girls are standing at the villains top window. We used the dark lighting within the house to make this scene seem more mysterious and suspicious.
2) Costumes and Make-up/Hair - The use of costume and make up make actors appear
lifelike to their character, how we present the character reflects on how the
audience perceive them. Costume is a style of dress, including garments,
accessories and hairstyle. With makeup you can make actors appear glamorous,
with the lack of makeup you can make them look like everyday people. Make up in
the earlier years of cinema was used to highlight facial features as black and
white film could not register detail very well, so more makeup had to be used.
In relation to thriller films if you want to show a woman fearful and in tears, smudged make up can be used to display her emotions. Costumes also give the impression of something else. This could be to show what type of class the main characters are whether their at a higher or a lower class, or this could show what type of person the character is within the shot.

This screen shot is one of the finishing screen grabs of when the camera is moving out of the house and then the front
door shuts to show entrapment. You can also see what the two victims looked
like after the kidnap. We did this by wetting our hair and smudging our makeup
to give a ghostly and spectral look.

This is a screen shot of one of the main
scenes within the thriller opening, this specific part was shot down an old
Thurlby road where this telephone box was found. We thought that this would be
a great place to film as it did not give away too much information but still
gave the sense of mystery and suspicion.
4)Facial expressions and body language in
performance - By the use of these elements, we
are able to capture the emotion of the characters. This includes the gestures,
postures, and facial expressions by which a person can make clear by various
physical, mental, or emotional actions. With the nonverbal communication the
audience is able to assume characteristics about the character and how they are
feeling by not being directly told. For example, if a character is scared we
can tell by Para language, proximity's etc.
From this Screen
grab you can see how we positioned the main characters to create the sense of
deformity and distress, by moving the head to the side it gives the audience
something to think about.
5) Position of characters and objectives in a frame - The way characters are positioned within a frame can tell the audience a lot about the character, levels of supremacy can be identified, how characters are centred and angled. In murder scenes the killer is usually the dominate the victim is the minor character, this can be displayed by staging and levels of the characters.

Sound
in a Thriller movie
Sound is a very important technique in thriller openings as the
different music themes produce a different mood and feel for the films. For
example jumpy and and quite scary music which are played in each scene, create
different atmosphere to a quiet more spooky set of music. Another sound element
which is very important is high pitched sounds/orchestral stabs such as
screeches. For example stabs used in films such a Psycho, when the character in
the shower is being stabbed. This adds suspense and horror the film to give it
its thrilling genre. Other sound elements which are used to give the films
their thrilling genres are; digetic/ non-diegetic sounds and sound effects,
like doors slamming or black birds crowing.
Representation- This film
inspired us because the main storyline to this film is that retired CIA agent travels across Europe and relies on
his old skills to save his estranged daughter and her friends, who were
kidnapped on a trip to Paris. Which helped us as a group to decide on what our
main plot would be within in our thriller opening, we decided to carry on with
the plot of having some sort of kidnap within our thriller opening as we felt
that that this is one of the main conventions in a thriller.
Title/ Graphics-
This is a screenshot of the beginning of
our movie. It involves the title of our film in a bold purple colour. We
decided to use a plain font as we did not want to give too much away from the first
clip of the thriller opening.
Camera Work- Close up
This type of shot would give the
impression that there was a sense of mystery in the scene. This shot only
concentrates on the face or a specific detail of mise-en-scene. Everything else
is a blur in the background. We used this type of shot within our thriller
opening rather a lot to show more the main characters in more detail for
example when describing what makeup we chose to use on the two girls this would
be a lot easier to show through a close up shot. We also decided to use this
shot within our thriller opening to portray the main characters emotions at
that point of the film.
.
This screen grab is showing the audience members what the stalkers
point of view would be at this point of the film.
Two shot- It is framed the same as a mid shot.
The will show a relationship between two people and will allow the audience to
see the proximity of the characters for themselves. We used this technique
within our thriller opening as it is good for establishing a relationship between
subjects and it also involves movement or action within the establishing shot.
Screen Grab
Within this
screen grab it is showing the two main girl characters speaking about meeting
up with the stalker. This shot is involving the technique two shot as we wanted
to show both characters emotions and point of view within one shot.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
One of our main characters within our
Thriller opening was a young girl who was kidnapped with her friend whilst
walking through the woods.
This young girl is the one of the main
characters in the film “ Taken”. She was very alike to the same character that
we had in our thriller opening.
Similarities
•
They are both right hand girls to their
other friends
•
They are both main roles in their
thriller movies
•
They both have brunette hair
•
They are both tall and thin
•
They are both kidnapped by stalkers
•
They are both the second ones to be
captured by the stalkers
•
Both the same age
•
Both female
•
Both did not know what was going to
happen
•
Both characters are shown in a darker
lighting than any other characters. This could be to show how both characters
are feeling at that certain point of the thriller. As both characters are
kinapped within their films they would be both feeling the same emotions.
•
When looking through some of the shot
types used in Taken we could see that most of them were similar to the shots
that were used within our thriller opening such as Close ups, point of view
shots and extreme close ups.
Differences
•
They both have different sense of costume
•
One girl calls her dad whilst the other
does not
•
One girl is found and the other is not
•
Our character is from a lower class
group. This is represented by how our character speaks within our thriller
opening. At somepoints of our thriller the way our character moves also gives
off the impression that she is at a lower class.
•
Taken character is saved whereas the
other is not
•
Our setting for our thriller opening is
different compared to Taken. This is because Taken was filmed in a loud and
busy city whereas our thriller opening was filmed in a quiet and rural
setting.
Representations
In our thriller we decided to create our
characters to be represented as victims from high class families. We made sure
that when filming our media that our main characters were dressed in the
appropriate costume to show their age e.g., plain jeans, top and a coat. Within
our thriller there were no props used as we felt that it would be hard to
incorporate these with our storyline. For makeup we just kept it the minimal as
we did not want to overdo it as we did not want the characters to look fake .
The main location that we filmed this character in was in the old Victorian
house. We included her in most of the shots filmed for example one of the main
shots that we filmed her in was the ending shot when the two girls were in the
top window after their abduction. In some points of the Thriller opening there
is a quick glance of the girls running away from the stalker, this main
location for this scene was in Clipsham. We did not have to travel as far to
this location which was a big help as we did not have a lot of time left to
film. We used a selection of shot types within this scene such as point of view
shots and close ups. We wanted to use a POV shot as we felt that this could
show the viewing audience how the girl was feeling that this particular point
of the thriller opening. When filming our thriller opening we wanted to still
keep natural lighting as we did not want anything too strong to make it seem
unreal and fake. At some point in our thriller we maybe wanted a dark light to
show the emotions of the character at that certain point.
Question 3 – What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?
MGM was founded in 1924 when the entertainment
entrepreneur Marcus HYPERLINK
"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcus_Loew"Loew gained control of Metro
Pictures. This is one of the most well known
companies in the media institution.
However they do have a rather low income,
with revenue of $7,849,312 in 2011, this could have been a large problem for
them as they would not be able to fund new and upcoming films in the future.
From looking at these results I can see that MGM were in trouble a few years
ago with their revenue. I feel that this did not affect they way our thriller
was produced by may affect some other movies being produced in the U.S.A.
MGM is the one of the oldest and the most
famous filming companies within America and by being
based here they will have a lot of useful resources at hand, and will have a
wide variety of places near that could be used to make the film.
MGM
is also a company known and trust worldwide so will allow our film to have a
lot of publicity all over the globe.
From the outset, MGM tapped into the audience's need for
glamour and sophistication. Having inherited few big names from their
predecessor companies, Mayer and Thalberg began at once to create and publicize
a host of new stars, among them Greta Garbo, John Gilbert, William Haines, Joan Crawford, and Norma Shearer (who
followed Thalberg from Universal) . Established names like Lon Chaney, William Powell, Buster Keaton, and Wallace Beery were
hired from other studios
MGM was one of the first studios to experiment with
filming in Technicolor. Using the two-colour Technicolor process then
available, MGM filmed portions of The Uninvited Guest (1923), The Big Parade
(1925), and Ben–Hur (1925), among others, in the process. In 1928, MGM released
The Viking, the first complete Technicolor feature with sound (including a
synchronized score and sound effects but no spoken dialogue). MGM, however, was
the very last studio to convert to "talkies" with its first
all-color, "all-talking" sound feature with dialogue The Rogue Song,
a 1930 musical.
Question 4-Who
would be the audience foyour media product?
To decide what audience range we wanted
to create our thriller opening for we looked at the “BBFC” website to see what
would be allowed to include in our thriller, also we could see that based on
our thriller we could determine what age group this would be suitable for. We
also looked at other thrillers to see how and why they had been given that
certain age certificate.
As a group we also decided to create a
questionnaire to see what the open public would want to see in a thriller
opening. The main questions that we asked was how old were they, what kind of
setting they would expect to see in a thriller opening to determine what type
of thriller our opening would be for example, action, religious, psychological
or mystery.
From our research we got some valuable
information which we could use during the process of creating our thriller
opening. We found that this research influenced our thriller characters in many
ways and our music that we decided to use as well at the beginning of our
thriller. At first we were going to use courageous and bold music but after
looking at our results from the questionnaire we decided to use more subtle and
quiet music to create tension.
As a group we decided to classify our
Thriller opening as a 15. We did this as we felt that there were some parts of
our thriller opening or parts of the storyline that may have been unsuitable
for some audience members under the age of 15. To decided what certificate this
film should be given we researched what a 15 should have included
• The work as a whole must not endorse
discriminatory language or behaviour
• Drug taking may
be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse.
Promotions of drugs which are easy to obtain are unlikely to be allowed.
• Strong threat and
menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualized
• Dangerous behaviour
(for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) can be allowed provided the
detail of such is low so that it cannot create too much of an impression of the
viewer. Abuse of weapons which are easily obtained will not be tolerated
• Frequent use of
strong language can be permitted, although very strong language needs to be
restricted and would have to be seen as reasonable in the context. Frequent
usage of very strong language would be seldom allowed.
• Nudity in a
sexual content must be restricted however nudity in a non-sexual content does
not.
• Sexual activity
without strong detail would most likely to be allowed. Some strong sexual references
may be allowed to, but very strong ones may not, unless used within reason.
Sexual acts or references with the intention of causing arousal are not likely
to be permitted.
• As long as the
film is appropriate for 15 year olds, no certain themes are prohibited.
• Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. The same applies to references. Any sexual violence should be discreet and be strongly justified.
Source: BBFC
Although our thriller does not include
most of these items we would still give this certificate to it as we did not
know what the rest of thriller would include. As our thriller was based on
abduction and is based on some current affairs some audience members could have
known what could have happened later on and may have need to be prepared for
this type of storyline. Some audience members may feel that this certificate
that we have given to our thriller opening is a little high for this opening,
however later on this storyline could have developed into something alot more
violent, and could contain some more graphic images of the two young victims
which would change the certificate given to this certain film. I feel that if
our storyline was not related to some recent current affairs then this opening
may have even been given a PG rating as there were no violent scenes and no
swear words used within the thriller opening, however as the main storyline to
this opening has been related to recent articles in the media then this may be
unsuitable for young people to be watching.
From looking at our results we could see
that older generation enjoy thrillers compared to the younger generation.
Question 5-How did you attract
/address your audience.
To attract our audience members we
decided to post our first preliminary video on different public sites. After
getting our questionnaire results back we wanted to mainly focus on what
location the viewing audience would prefer to see when watching our thriller
opening ,this was because it was one of the main genres which was going to help
to describe to the audience what our main storyline to our thriller opening
would be. When looking at our feedback I feel that most of it was rather
positive, saying that it was all put together very well and that the continuity
was good. Another positive point that was said was that the final product was
very realistic and effective; I feel that this was mainly because we used a
storyline which was recent to the public after articles being produced with
recent affairs containing kidnap. One comment suggests that we could have
changed the music in some areas of the opening as at some points seemed a
little too cheesy and did not really fit in with the emotions that the
characters were feeling at that particular moment.
Question 6- What have you learnt about technologies from the process
of constructing this product?
These were Facebook and YouTube. At first
I was confused on how to put our video onto YouTube however as I had a Google
account this was a lot easier to post onto instead of creating a YouTube
account. After showing our video to various audience members we did have a lot
of positive feedback. The feedback mainly consisted of that the editing and the
continuity within the video was effective yet professional. However there were
some negative points as we did not use any music within this certain video
which did sometimes make the video seem unrealistic. After receiving this
information we could see where we could make our next video meet the needs and
the expectations for our viewing audience.
Blogger- We used this site to store our
work and information for our media work. We tend to update this everyday if we
complete a new piece of work. This helped the organisation during the making of
our thriller as we could place all of our research for our thriller onto this
website. This site was easy and effective to use to look back on our work that
we have already completed.
Search Engines- Google, Wikipedia and
YouTube were used to research for any information about thrillers or what our
thriller should include. From using these websites we could watch other
thrillers openings which could help to inspire us later on.
YouTube and Facebook- After finalising
our final thriller piece we had to promote it so we could get some sort of
feedback for which we could take on board for our next video which we will be
creating, and I could also use this feedback for my final evaluation of our
thriller opening.
Video Camera- To shoot our final thriller
opening we decided to use one of the school’s own cameras as these cameras are
more up to date and easier to use. From using this style of camera I have more
knowledge on how to use film cameras and what part of the camera does. With
using the camera at different angles I could later on see what worked best in
the mise-en-scene and what did not. However when comparing to our preliminary I
feel that I did not really help out with using the video camera as I struggled
to understand what part of the camera does what. When creating our preliminary
we still used a school camera, from this I could learn from my mistakes and
improve my skills of my camera knowledge for the next time we film.
IMovie- After filming our thriller we
needed something to edit all of our footage onto and to add text and music.
This certain program helped us to add more effective transitions such as cross
blur, fade to white, circle open and many more. IMovie is also place where we
could place all of our software without having the worry of it being lost or
bring unsaved.
IDVD- After all of footage had been edited
we needed to download it onto a disc to send off for our final mark we did this
by placing our footage onto this program and burning it onto a disc.
I feel that during the process of
creating our thriller opening I have gained more knowledge about producing and
editing a piece of footage throughout these few weeks. During the shooting of
our movie we each all had a go at filming and acting. Whilst filming I have
learnt different techniques to hold the camera at and how to record a steady
shot. I have also learnt about how to set up a shot so that we had the correct
amount of lighting within the frame and to make sure that it looked as
realistic as it could. However I found getting the correct amount of lighting
in the shot rather hard as when we were filming our footage the weather was
changing every so often so we had to analyse when we should shoot the scenes
which would need the most light in it.
After filming our footage I then had to
learn how to use movie editing programs on the apple mac computer. I had never
used IMovie before so I did not understand what some aspects of the program
did. As a whole class we all had a lesson on how to use this certain program
after doing this I felt more confident using it. I started to improve the
continuity of the piece by cutting the clips at the right moment, I had also
improved on using the different styles of transitions for example if there was
a certain tense moment in the movie then I would use a quick and flashy
transition for example when the camera flashes back to one of the girl victims
and she has a ghostly look to her, whereas if there was a more happier and
pleasing moment then I would use a slower and more subtle transition. One of
the main effects that I learnt to use was the reverse effect. We wanted to use
this one within our thriller as it would make it seem more psychological and
mind boggling for the audience members. At first when applying this technique
to the movie I felt that this would may be too confusing for some audience
members, however because the audience have already seen the footage played in a
normal speed then it may become easier to understand whilst the footage is
being played in reverse by the end of the movie as the audience members have
become aware of the storyline.
I have also had to learn how to use the
apple mac computers to import music into our thriller opening. We also had to
edit it to make sure that it sounded like a whole piece of music.
We did encounter some problems whilst
trying to edit our thriller opening this was because we felt that in some
places it didn’t have that feeling of terror and mystery within our thriller.
To improve this problem we had to add in some more transitions and find an
instrumental song which would help to show what emotions we were trying to
portray towards the viewing audience. I also feel that there was a lack of
footage when we started to edit the movie. I felt that this was a rather
problem for the group because if there was a small scene that we did not like
or had a few problems with then there would be no other footage to fall back
on. However whilst editing it we realized that the footage that we had shot
look rather effective and we were pleased with the outcome.
Question 7- Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel
you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
I feel that I have improved a lot from
the preliminary task when comparing to my new thriller opening, I have done
this by improving my camera skills within the thriller opening. When looking
back at our last video that we created I feel that we used too many editing
skills within it so I made sure that this time round I did not over do the
effects. When creating our preliminary we did not use any storyboards or
scripts to help us, I feel that this was a rather large mistake as we struggled
to create our piece without these essential items. After learning from this
mistake we made sure that this time round that before filming we created a
storyboard, wrote a script to learn lines from, and we also wrote down what
shots we would be including in our thriller opening. I felt that this helped us
with our organisation skills as a group and would help us for later on during
the media course.
To also help us with organising our
thriller opening we all created some mood boards to show us what props,
costumes, and location we would be using.
The Weather- During the filming of our thriller the
weather changed rather a lot which we did find a problem at some points of our
filming. There were some parts of the day where the weather was portraying the
emotion of the character (Pathetic Fallacy). When we were filming the ending
shots of our thriller opening we needed dark and dull lighting. I feel that
when looking back at this piece of footage we can see that the type of weather
that we had really helped to create this petrifying feeling.
Battery Life- One of the main problems that we thought
that we could have encountered was the battery life of the camera. We had a
worry of that when we were filming the battery life of the camera could go down
and we would not have a camera for the rest of the day. However we made that we
fully charged the battery in both cameras to make sure that no problems like
this would occur.
Organisation- After the problems that we encountered
during the filming of the preliminary tasks we made sure that this time round
that we all had a role to make sure that everything that we needed to film eg
script, storyboard and type of shots shall all be completed and ready to use.
Overall I feel that on the day of filming
we all worked well and confidently together. The footage that we got contained
a good number of shots and effects which could help the thriller opening to
seem more effective. We all listened to each other’s ideas which should
hopefully be shown in the final product.
I feel that I have learnt how to produce
and to create a short film as I have taken my time to create a storyboard and a
script to help us through the process of making the movie. If I were to redo
this certain project I would have maybe chosen a different storyline as this
one was rather hard to show in a short amount of time. I also feel that we
could have used our time more wisely during the time of filming as by the end
of the day we nearly ran out of time to shoot some certain scenes.
